Background
Spindale is located in Rutherford County and is a part of the new Thermal Belt Rail Trail system. With an increase in users on the 7.35 miles of trail through the town, Spindale has demonstrated continued commitment to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety through their Watch for Me NC programming. Spindale also partnered with NCDOT to develop a bicycle and pedestrian plan to look at possible infrastructure improvements, such as a road diet on Oak Street and better connections between the Thermal Belt Rail Trail and residential areas.

Partnerships
The Spindale Police Department leads the Watch for Me NC efforts and collaborates with other local and regional agencies such as the Spindale Planning Department, Spindale Fire Department, Isothermal RPO, and Spindale Safe Kids.

Education and Enforcement Activities
Spindale continues to improve safety for all road users through several education events. The Fire Department and Police Department have been actively engaging the community through outreach and education, while the Town hosts events with opportunities for education and engagement.The Police Department and Fire Departments also worked with Active Routes to School and organized several bicycle rodeos and provided support to physical education teachers to teach bicycle skills and crosswalk safety.

Lessons Learned
