As part of the Watch For Me NC safety program, the North Carolina Department of Transportation and UNC’s Highway Safety Research Center are offering “Enforcement for Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety.”  This free, full-day training will be offered to all sworn law enforcement officers seeking pedestrian and bicyclist safety training.

For Watch for Me NC Partner Communities: Priority seats will be given to partner communities first.  Attendance is required to:

  • Gain access to GHSP’s STEP system to report and receive credits for related enforcement activities.
  • Receive safety training materials. Watch for Me NC materials are distributed to partner communities after an officer from their community participates in the training.

This course provides law enforcement officers with the special traffic management knowledge and skills they need to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety in their communities. Sgt. Brian Massengill with the Durham Police Department will present the latest pedestrian and bicyclist safety enforcement information. Topic areas include:

  • Where pedestrians and bicyclists fit in
  • Engineering for pedestrian/bicycle safety
  • How pedestrian/bicycle crashes occur
  • The role of education and enforcement
  • Relevant laws and enforcement practices

  • Crash investigation and reporting
  • Potential law enforcement partners

The course will include hands-on, in-the-field training on how to conduct a Pedestrian Crosswalk Enforcement Operation.

Lunch will be provided during training.
